Sam Spangler joined the practice full time after nearly two decades working in the education, business, and health insurance fields. He holds two Master’s degrees and is a life-long University of Georgia football fan. He shares his wife’s (Dr. Spangler’s) passion for animals and has been the proud pet dad of many fur babies through the years. Bulldogs hold a special place in his heart and he has been privileged to rescue 3 of them through the years. His current bulldog, Fidget, can usually be found by his side in his truck or at the clinic. Sam brings not only a passion for pets and pet care, but a dedication to strengthening client relations and continuing the great work that Old Dominion Veterinary Clinic has been known for. Sam manages the practice with the philosophy that “Our clients and patients are our first priority!”

Dr. Cindy Downes grew up on a farm in Southeastern Pennsylvania, where she spent hours riding her horse, exploring the great outdoors, and romping with the various dogs the family kept throughout the years. She developed a connection with nature and animals when she was only a little girl—that feeling never quit. Now, Dr. Downes has been helping pets and animal parents as a licensed veterinarian for more than 30 years!

Dr. Downes attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana to earn her undergraduate degree in biology, and remained at the school to graduate from Purdue’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1985. Afterward, she and her husband—a graduate of Purdue’s veterinary school himself—moved back to the East Coast to be closer to family, where Dr. Downes worked in a New Jersey clinic for a number of years.

In 2000, Dr. Downes and her husband relocated to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, where she continued to work in shelter medicine and relief services. That’s when she met Dr. Spangler—the pair worked together in a spay/neuter and wellness clinic for several years, and Dr. Downes was happy to join the team here at Old Dominion Veterinary Clinic when Dr. Spangler mentioned that she could use another doctor.

Dr. Downes’ favorite parts of her job are infectious disease treatment, geriatric care counseling, and working alongside a talented team of animal-lovers just like herself. Nothing beats coming to work in the morning with friendly, kind staff members who aren’t afraid to have a little fun!

Away from work, Dr. Downes enjoys reading great books, planting flowers and herbs in her garden, cooking, and walking and hiking with her dogs. She and her husband have three grown children and share their home with Emmee, an aging Dachshund; Lacey the rambunctious Brittany Spaniel mix; and a sleep-loving cat named Karu. They also keep 70 chickens who provide them with plenty of eggs—Dr. Downes’ husband has even made a bit of a local business selling eggs, home-grown fruits, and organic vegetables!

Ever since she was a young girl, Dr. Shelley Spangler enjoyed the fields of biology and medicine. She also felt a deep kinship with the earth’s creatures, and recognized early on the important bonds that we share with our beloved animal companions. Dr. Spangler realized that by working as a veterinarian, she could combine her scientific interests with her passion for pets. She never looked back!

Dr. Spangler was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware and attended the University of Delaware on a full scholarship to study animal science, also earning a minor in entomology. Next, she headed to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech to obtain her veterinary degree in 2000. She’s been helping pets via small-animal private practice, shelter medicine, and relief work around the Roanoke Valley ever since!

Dr. Spangler purchased Old Dominion Veterinary Clinic in March of 2017. She has a special interest in dermatology work, and loves to correct common and frustrating skin-health problems to give pet owners peace of mind. Dr. Spangler also likes soft-tissue surgery, and credits her many years of performing spay-and-neuter surgeries in shelters with helping her to feel extremely comfortable in the surgical ward.

Dr. Spangler and her husband, Sam, have three children—Sarah, Caleb, and Noah—all of whom love to come to the clinic and help out whenever they can. The family shares their lives with a Pomeranian named Macy; Gwenie the Shih Tzu; a Standard Poodle who goes by Aero; and eight lovable cats.
